Why see a Geriatrician?
Older patients often present with multiple interacting conditions, which can be difficult to diagnose and manage in single-condition clinics.
A geriatrician:
- Takes a holistic, systems-based approach
- Identifies underlying and reversible causes
- Reviews medications in detail
- Assesses cognition, mobility and independence
- Integrates physical, cognitive and functional health
This leads to more accurate diagnosis and safer, more effective treatment.
👉 The key difference
Many services focus on a single issue such as memory. A geriatric assessment ensures that all contributing factors are identified and managed together, leading to a more accurate diagnosis and better outcomes.

Excellent rating
Based on 33 reviewsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had an excellent experience with Dr Jha at Thornbury Hospital. He was incredibly caring, thorough, and took the time to explain everything in a way that both I and my family could clearly understand. I never felt rushed and he made sure all of our questions were answered. His communication was outstanding from the very first phone call to arrange the consultation. Within 24 hours of the appointment I received a detailed summary by email, and he even followed up with messages to check how I was doing. It’s rare to find a doctor who combines such professionalism with genuine care. I would highly recommend Dr Jha to anyone looking for a thoughtful, knowledgeable and compassionate doctor. Kevan HarrisTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dr Jha responded very quickly to my initial enquiry. Arranged an appointment within a couple of days. Made my mum feel at ease and we decided to go ahead with the assessment. We received a very detailed letter that evening with a full diagnosis (also sent to G.P.). Nicola WildTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I booked a private consultation with Dr. Jah for my mum, and the experience was excellent. He was kind, professional, and made her feel completely at ease. Everything ran on time, and the follow‑up report was clear, detailed, and genuinely helpful. I’m really grateful for the care he provided — the service was outstanding from start to finish. Nicola WiddowsonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dear Dr Jha, on behalf of myself and my wife Monica, we would like to thank you for your swift response to our call during what was an extremely difficulty time. Your visit to our home to see me personally, in a most kind, understanding and professional manner, which put me at ease knowing you were understanding of my problem. It was a blessing to receive medication swiftly together with appropriate scans. Once again my grateful thanks. John Slater john slaterTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dr Jha understands how important it is to make the consultation as relaxed and calm as possible. His review appointment was exactly this. He communicates extremely well and as a family we are very grateful for his care. Kathryn WellsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Really helpful. Got to see us the same day. Makes my husband feel at ease and diagnosed straight away with the signs and symptoms he had. It’s not the first time we have seen him and both times efficient, helpful and really supportive. Helen WeatherstonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I would highly recommend Dr Jha. He came out to visit my 94 year old mother in her sheltered accommodation at very short notice and when we were desperate. He spent two hours assessing her. He put her very much at her ease. As a consequence of the resulting report and diagnosis we were able to make plans for her future safety and health. She was also able to start on a regime of medication that has made an enormous difference. She is now in a Care Home but as a result of his diagnosis and medication she is thriving once again. Without his timely intervention I fear she would not be with us today. Maggie ThurmanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Very professional and we got an appointment straight away I wouldn't hesitate to recommend 😊 Karina PridgeonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dr Jha replied very promptly to my initial enquiry and was willing to visit my aunt and assess her at her Care Home in Mexborough within 2 days. We received his report (in the form of a letter to the GP) and the required PA14 Medical Certificate form the next day. We were very grateful for his swift and professional work. The supervisor at my aunt’s Care Home reported that Dr Jha had a very patient and understanding manner with my aunt, putting her at ease. He had a sensitive approach to which my aunt responded well. He was respectful and understanding when she became agitated. He made a thorough assessment of my aunt which took, as he had said it would, about 2 hours. I have been very pleased with, and grateful for, every aspect of Dr Jha’s work. Mrs Helen Garner Nigel Garner

A Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) is a specialist medical evaluation of an older person’s physical health, cognition, function, medications, and overall wellbeing, designed to identify complex problems and create a personalised care plan.
It goes beyond single-disease diagnosis and focuses on the whole person.
If there is noticeable decline, tremor, slowness of function, forgetfullness, repeated falls, confusion, or increasing dependence, an assessment is recommended.
A detailed review of memory, thinking, physical health, medications and daily function, followed by a clear diagnosis and care plan.
This service assesses not only memory but also physical health, medications, mobility, and daily function — providing a more complete picture.

General geriatric assessment takes about an hour.
