I’m Dr Pravin Jha, a consultant geriatrician offering private osteoporosis assessments in Sheffield. I review your bone health and fracture risk as part of a Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, alongside falls risk, mobility, medication and general health, rather than looking at bone density in isolation. No GP referral is required, and I can usually offer an appointment within 24–48 hours at Spire Claremont Hospital, Circle Thornbury Hospital, by home visit, or by video consultation anywhere in the UK.

Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment
Many services look at bone health in isolation.
I take a different approach: an osteoporosis assessment forms part of a Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, so falls risk, mobility, medication and general health are reviewed alongside your bone health, because these factors are often connected.
👉 Key point: Early assessment and treatment can prevent a fracture.
my expertise
What an Osteoporosis Assessment Involves?
I take a detailed history, including previous fractures, family history and risk factors for bone loss.
Where appropriate, I may arrange a DEXA (bone density) scan and use tools such as FRAX to estimate your 10-year fracture risk.
I review current medication, calcium and vitamin D status, and discuss treatment options — including bisphosphonates where clinically appropriate — as part of your wider geriatric care.

When to Seek an Osteoporosis Assessment?
Consider an assessment if you have had –
- a fracture from a minor fall
- have a family history of osteoporosis or hip fracture,
- have risk factors such as early menopause or long-term steroid use
- if a previous bone density scan showed low bone density.
I also assess bone health as part of a wider falls or frailty assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is osteoporosis assessment covered as part of a general geriatric assessment?
Yes. I review bone health as part of a Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment alongside falls risk, mobility, medication and general health, rather than as a stand-alone test.
Will I need a DEXA scan?
A DEXA (bone density) scan may be arranged if clinically appropriate, based on your history and risk factors. I will discuss whether this is needed at your assessment.
Do I need a GP referral?
No, you can refer yourself directly. I can send a copy of my report to your GP with your consent.
How is fracture risk assessed?
I use clinical history alongside tools such as FRAX, which estimates your 10-year risk of fracture, to help guide whether treatment is appropriate.
What treatments are available for osteoporosis?
Treatment depends on your individual risk and may include lifestyle measures, calcium and vitamin D, or medication such as bisphosphonates. I will discuss the options relevant to you.
